Jail Releases Strain Resources and Credulity

Re “Jail Inmates Freed Early to Save Money,” March 25: So, here’s a big surprise: Releasing misdemeanor or low-risk county prisoners, like stalkers, spousal abusers and drunk drivers, is easier on L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca’s budget than actually housing them. After all, they will just get out eventually anyway.
Never mind that it puts enormous strain on street cops and the county courts, as was reported, but also on the county Probation Department, not mentioned. And never mind that the stalked, the abused and the run-off-the-road have to deal with the fact that their tormentors are back on the street again with no hope of -- or time for -- rehabilitation. I love this town.
