Police Force in Jeopardy Over City Budget Crunch

After only one murder in 30 years, local officials are considering cuts to the Police Department to solve the town’s cash-flow problems.
Ideas in this Yuba County city of 3,000 people include making the police chief’s job part time and eliminating overtime pay for up to two police officers. Officials also have considered disbanding the Police Department and contracting with sheriff’s officials.
But some residents point to plans for 1,000 new homes in the next 10 years and oppose the proposed cutbacks.
