Getty’s purchase still in Britain

The British government extended for three more months its ban on the export of a rare illustrated manuscript of psalms, discovered earlier this year in the library at Shirburn Castle in Oxfordshire. Outbidding the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, the J. Paul Getty Museum bought the manuscript at a Sotheby’s auction this summer for about $2.8 million.
Under British law, if matching funds to equal the price the Getty paid in June can be raised before Feb. 10, the 700-year-old manuscript can stay in Britain.
More than $1.1 million has been pledged so far to keep the medieval Macclesfield Psalter in Britain, according to the nonprofit National Art Collections Fund.
