Governor Asks Turnpike Chairman to Step Down

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney called on the state turnpike chairman to resign, days after it was revealed that hundreds of leaks were found in the $14.6-billion highway tunnel project known in Boston as the Big Dig.
“I lost confidence in the Turnpike Authority’s ability to manage the project some time ago,” Romney said. “The public has also lost confidence in the management of the Big Dig.”
Turnpike Authority Chairman Matthew Amorello has defended the agency’s handling of a breach in the walls and other problems with the tunnel project.
Amorello said he would not step down despite the governor’s request.
