Lawmakers Approve Restrictions on Military

Indonesia’s parliament approved a landmark law on the military that allows the top brass to retain some of its powers but forces its members to surrender their widespread business enterprises within five years.
The bill, aimed at defining the role of the military after President Suharto’s 1998 ouster, was seen as a compromise between the demands of rights groups who want the military under civilian control and generals keen to keep their privileges.
