Federal Grant to Boost Terrorism Response

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded a $400,000 grant to the county’s public health department to improve terrorism-response plans, officials said Thursday.
The funds will be used to help train up to 500 public safety, medical and health workers to deal with bioterrorism and other emergencies; to conduct at least four drills; and to buy equipment for hazardous-materials teams. The funding must be used by March 31, 2006.
“We need to prepare now, even if Riverside County does not seem like a high-risk target,” said Supervisor Roy Wilson in a written statement. “Lives depend on preparing for an event that we all hope never happens.”
