Volleyball Powers Converge at Mitty

Two of the top 20 girls’ volleyball teams in the nation will meet today when Los Angeles Marymount plays Mountain View St. Francis in a first-round match of the San Jose Mitty tournament, one of two premier tournaments this weekend.
Marymount, ranked No. 4 by prepvolleyball.com, features middle blocker Sue Carls, who helped the Sailors win a fourth consecutive state Division IV title last year. No. 18 St. Francis is the four-time defending state Division III champion. Santa Barbara and No. 13 Mitty are also entered.
Corona del Mar and Santa Margarita join four teams ranked in the top 20 at the Chicago McAuley Nike tournament. Santa Margarita has No. 10 Dubuque (Iowa) Wahlert in its pool. Other pools feature No. 2 Louisville (Ky.) Assumption, No. 12 McAuley and No. 14 Bellevue (Neb.) West.
Top Performers
* J.W. Krumpholtz, Santa Ana Foothill boys’ water polo: Scored five goals in a 13-11 upset of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (6-1), the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I poll. Barron Benjamin and Calvin Hohner each had three goals for Foothill (7-3). Justin Rappel had five goals and three assists for the Wolverines.
* Krystina Gillenwater, Menifee Paloma Valley girls’ golf: Shot three-under-par 33 in a 195-205 nonleague loss at Desert Willow Golf Resort to Palm Desert, which was led by Alana Erlandson (35), Erin Stashi (36) and Kelly McDaniel (39) en route to a nine-hole scoring record.
* Logan Hansen, Brentwood girls’ tennis: Defeated Ally Kasnopolsky, 6-3, in sweeping her three singles sets in a 10-8 Olympic League victory over North Hollywood Campbell Hall, which defeated Brentwood last season for the Division III title.
