Several Varieties of Bread and Bottled Foods Recalled

Several varieties of bread and bottled papaya sold in Southern California stores were recalled Thursday because of potential health risks.
Zambales Bakery of San Diego recalled an unknown quantity of atchara, or pickled papaya, and ampalaya atchara, pickled bitter melon, due to potential contamination of Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can cause illness or death.
Consumers were advised not to use the products even if they do not appear spoiled.
The products were distributed to markets in San Diego and Los Angeles counties, including Seafood City stores in both counties.
The atchara is packed in one-pound clear plastic jars with no expiration, “use by” dates or lot codes.
Interstate Bakeries Corp. of Kansas City, Mo., recalled three varieties of its “Great Value” white bread, sold in 13 Wal-Mart stores in Southern California. The packaging fails to list whey among the ingredients.
People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to whey or milk protein run the risk of a life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat the product.
The bread carries “sell by” dates of Sept. 20 through Oct. 4 and the code numbers 22264 to 22278.
