Toll of Violence Grows in Port-au-Prince

Violence in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has claimed at least 46 lives recently -- 17 of them this week, hospital records show -- and the U.S. State Department accused supporters of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide of trying to destabilize the interim government.
Port-au-Prince has been beset by gun battles and beheadings since a Sept. 30 demonstration marked the 1991 coup that overthrew Aristide for the first time. In February, the former priest fled the country again after a three-week revolt led by a street gang and former soldiers.
