Rioters in the western Chinese region of Chongqing burned police cars and looted government buildings after a quarrel between residents escalated into a riot involving thousands, residents and officials said.
A report on the website of the Hong Kong newspaper Ming Pao said about 1,000 riot police dispersed the brick-throwing mobs with tear gas and rubber bullets. No figures on injuries were given, but 10 arrests were reported. The riot reportedly was sparked by a quarrel between fruit market workers and a delivery boy.
