CAMP PENDLETON — Charges have been dropped against a Marine officer accused of condoning the abuse of Iraqi prisoners last year at a detention facility near Nasiriyah, officials said Wednesday.
After reviewing the evidence, Maj. Gen. Timothy E. Donovan dismissed the charges against Maj. Michael Froeder as unsubstantiated.
A court-martial is scheduled to begin Nov. 1 for a second officer, Maj. Clarke Paulus. Sgt. Gary Pittman was convicted last month of dereliction of duty and sentenced to 60 days’ hard labor in the same case.
