THIS WEEK’S TOP FOOTBALL GAMES

SOUTHERN SECTION

Valencia (6-1, 2-0) vs. Newhall Hart (5-2, 2-0) at College of the Canyons, 7:30 p.m. Friday

Hart has not lost a league game in more than a decade, but that streak is in jeopardy. Ranked No. 9 in the Southland by The Times, Hart has won all 10 meetings with No. 13 Valencia, but the Vikings enter this year with an experienced quarterback in Michael Herrick, who has passed for 1,805 yards and 18 touchdowns. Valencia has averaged 35.1 points. Hart’s quarterback-receiver combo of Tyler Lyon and Ryan Wolfe is the most prolific in the Foothill League. Lyon has passed for 1,896 yards, and Wolfe has 835 receiving yards for an offense that averages 34.6 points. Hart has also shored up a defense that gave up 105 points in its first four games. The Indians have given up only 38 in their last four.

Colton (6-1, 4-0) at Rialto Eisenhower (4-3, 3-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday

Eisenhower represents the Citrus Belt League’s past glory, but it needs a victory to prevent a league newcomer from sprinting off with the title. Colton’s only loss was to No. 16 L.A. Crenshaw, 31-20. Running back Allen Bradford led Colton to a 36-28 victory over Redlands last week while Eisenhower saw Redlands East Valley score as time expired for a 26-24 victory. That wasn’t the Eagles’ only loss: Quarterback Peter Salazar broke his leg and is out at least four weeks, and receiver Maurice McKnight suffered a strained neck and will sit out this game.

Santa Ana Mater Dei (6-1, 2-0) vs. Los Angeles Loyola (6-1, 2-0) at Glendale High, 7:30 p.m. Saturday

Second-ranked Mater Dei has lost only to top-ranked Mission Viejo but held the Diablos to a season-low 14 points. The Monarchs have given up only 76 points. Tenth-ranked Loyola, which lost to No. 9 Newhall Hart, 17-16, has given up only 65 points. To win what promises to be a physical Serra League game, Loyola can’t give up the big play. Monarch quarterback Kyle Woody is averaging 23.8 yards a completion, and receiver Robert Dubrish III is averaging 32.5 a catch. Loyola won last year’s game, 31-28, on Thomas Weber’s field goal in the second overtime.

CITY SECTION

Los Angeles Crenshaw (6-1, 2-0) vs. Los Angeles Dorsey (6-1, 2-0) at Jackie Robinson Stadium, Rancho Cienega Park, 7 p.m. Friday

The last two meetings between these teams have been decided by a point. The featured matchup is between Dorsey’s prolific running backs Jeremiah Johnson, a senior, and Stafon Johnson, a junior, and No. 16 Crenshaw’s stingy defense, led by linebackers Reggie Carter and Solomon Elimimian. No. 12 Dorsey will also attempt to get the ball past defensive backs Gardner McKay and Darian Hagan and into the hands of receiver David Gettis. Crenshaw tailback Rickie Collins will face a Don defense led by linebacker Zach Crossland. The winner figures to take the Coliseum League title.

Woodland Hills Taft (6-1, 2-0) at Lake Balboa Birmingham (4-3, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. Friday

The West Valley League title is at stake, not to mention a high seeding in the City playoffs. These teams rely on speed and big-play offenses. No. 21 Birmingham, though, has posed a consistent problem for the No. 17 Toreadors, who have had trouble stopping the Patriots’ power rushing game. “They know it’s coming,” Birmingham Coach Ed Croson said. “I can’t tell you when, but it’s coming.” The play at quarterback will be crucial. Taft’s Josh Portis and Birmingham’s Andrew Miramontes must avoid mistakes and demonstrate leadership in a game that will be televised live by FSN West 2.
