China Resists Voluntary Curbs on Textile Exports

A Chinese official warned that the U.S. could face a challenge at the World Trade Organization if it moves to block an expected surge of textile imports from China.
Haiyun Liu, first secretary at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said Beijing would not agree to restrictions.
U.S. textile groups plan to seek restrictions on the importation of apparel from China when a decades-old quota system expires Jan. 1.

* The WTO ruled that Brazil’s farmers have been hurt by government assistance for U.S. cotton farmers and European Union sugar beet growers. The U.S. vowed to appeal parts of the cotton ruling. An EU spokesman said it would decide whether to appeal the sugar ruling.
