The federal government will evaluate the cost effectiveness of U.S. Border Patrol checkpoints on freeways, including those in Temecula on Interstate 15 and near San Clemente on Interstate 5, said U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Vista).
Issa said Thursday that the Government Accountability Office had agreed to study whether the checkpoints should be closed and their budgets reallocated to other Border Patrol efforts.
According to immigration officials, the checkpoints are a crucial element in the Border Patrol’s strategy to deter illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
