An off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy died Wednesday evening after being struck by a pickup while riding his bicycle on Bear Valley Road, authorities said.
William Mansfield, 45, of Victorville was taken by helicopter to Loma Linda University Medical Center and died during surgery.
Sheriff’s officials said that the driver of the pickup said he did not see Mansfield and that there was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved. The Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is studying the collision, and will forward its findings to the San Bernardino County district attorney’s office.
Mansfield, a 14-year veteran of the department, is survived by his wife and two daughters.
