Jury Recommends Death for Girl’s Killer
A San Bernardino County jury recommended Friday that Dean Eric Dunlap be executed for the kidnapping, rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 2 by Superior Court Judge Michael A. Smith.
Dunlap, a convicted child molester, was linked to the case of Sandra Astorga of San Bernardino in 1999, seven years after the girl disappeared while walking to school. The case remained unsolved until state Department of Justice officials matched semen on the girl’s clothes to a blood sample taken from Dunlap in 1996, when he was paroled after serving a sentence for sexual assault.
