One Final Walk Through ‘The Gates’

Taking advantage of sunny, dry weather and the last chance to see a $21-million art project, thousands of people streamed through Central Park to bid farewell to “The Gates,” which filled the park’s winter-brown landscape since Feb. 12 with miles of bright orange fabric.
“This is sort of a moment to soar in spirit and joy,” said Sita Culman of Baltimore. “It’s here and then it’s gone tomorrow. Enjoy the moment.”
Teams hired by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude were set to take down the 7,503 gates beginning this morning. The thousands of tons of steel, orange plastic and saffron-colored nylon fabric are to be recycled.
The artists financed the project with sales of their works.
