FOXX, ‘SIDEWAYS’ LEAD NOMINATIONS FOR SAG AWARDS

Times Staff Writer

One actor and one movie dominated Tuesday’s nominations for Screen Actors Guild Awards: Jamie Foxx and “Sideways,” with four apiece.

Foxx, a former stand-up comic, was nominated for lead male actor for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the movie “Ray” and as a member of its ensemble cast. He was also nominated for supporting male actor for the film “Collateral” and for lead male actor in a TV movie or miniseries for “Redemption.”

The four nominations for “Sideways” were for lead male actor, Paul Giamatti, supporting female actor, Virginia Madsen, supporting male actor, Thomas Haden Church, and for the ensemble cast.

Foxx, also nominated for three Golden Globes for the same performances, just received the National Society of Film Critics award for best actor for “Ray” and “Collateral.”

Foxx and Giamatti’s fellow nominees for lead male actor in a theatrical film are Don Cheadle for “Hotel Rwanda,” Johnny Depp for “Finding Neverland” and Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Aviator.”

Nominees for best female actor in a leading movie role are Annette Bening for “Being Julia,” Catalina Sandino Moreno for “Maria Full of Grace,” Imelda Staunton for “Vera Drake,” Hilary Swank for “Million Dollar Baby” and Kate Winslet for “Eternal Sunshine for the Spotless Mind.”

Missing from SAG’s contenders are Golden Globe nominees Javier Bardem for “The Sea Inside,” Liam Neeson for “Kinsey” and Clive Owen and Natalie Portman for “Closer,” as well as Kevin Bacon for “The Woodsman.”

Last year, three SAG Award winners went on to win Oscars: best actress Charlize Theron for “Monster,” supporting actor Tim Robbins for “Mystic River” and supporting actress Renee Zellweger for “Cold Mountain.”

In the TV categories, “The Sopranos,” “Will & Grace” and “Everybody Loves Raymond” are among the shows with multiple nominations.

Two randomly selected panels -- one for television and one for film -- each included 2,100 SAG members and selected this year’s nominees. Approximately 98,000 members of the guild will vote on all acting categories.

The 11th annual SAG Awards ceremony will be held Feb. 5 in Los Angeles in a two-hour ceremony televised on cable’s TNT.
