A fiery traffic accident south of town killed five people and closed California Highway 273 for several hours, police said.
A car traveling south “at a high rate of speed” struck another car carrying four people just before 7 p.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Craig Kinneavy. The two cars then struck a third vehicle.
The second car burst into flames, killing all four occupants, Kinneavy said. The driver of the southbound car also died at the scene, he said. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured.
The victims’ identities were not immediately available.
