Utley’s Slam Helps Extend Giants’ Slump

Pinch-hitter Chase Utley’s two-out grand slam in the eighth inning helped the Philadelphia Phillies beat the slumping San Francisco Giants, 10-6, Wednesday night at Philadelphia.

The Phillies, last in the East, have won 11 of 17 and are within one game of .500 (26-27) for the first time since April 22. The Giants have lost six in a row for the first time since August 2003.

Pat Burrell started the eighth with a single against LaTroy Hawkins (0-5). Tomas Perez walked and David Bell sacrificed.

After Jason Michaels was walked intentionally, Mike Lieberthal lined to second. Utley, a former UCLA star, then lined his ninth homer of the season into the right-field seats.

Milwaukee 5, San Diego 2 -- Carlos Lee and Geoff Jenkins homered to help the Brewers avoid a three-game sweep at San Diego. The loss came one day after the Padres completed their best month ever by going 22-6 in May. It also ended their club-record 11-game home winning streak and their six-game overall winning streak.

Houston 4, Cincinnati 1 -- Roy Oswalt took the major league lead for victories against a team without a defeat, improving to 14-0 against the Reds.

Oswalt (6-6) pitched seven innings, yielded four hits and struck out four. He was tied for the lead in victories against one team without a loss with Pedro Martinez of the New York Mets, who has a 13-0 record against Seattle.

Atlanta 5, Washington 4 -- Late lineup addition Wilson Betemit hit a tying two-run homer, and Marcus Giles capped an eighth-inning rally with a run-scoring single to lift the Braves at Washington.

Betemit, playing because shortstop Rafael Furcal was a last-minute scratch because of a sore right shoulder, drove the first pitch he saw from reliever Hector Carrasco (1-1) into the visiting bullpen to tie the score at 4-4.

New York 2, Arizona 1 -- Victor Zambrano took a shutout into the ninth inning, and Jose Reyes’ speed helped the Mets win at Shea Stadium. Zambrano (3-5) gave up five hits, walked three and struck out five. Reyes had three hits, stole three bases and scored a run.

Pittsburgh 9, Florida 1 -- Rob Mackowiak hit his second career grand slam, and the Pirates won their ninth in a row against the Marlins at Pittsburgh. Florida extended its longest losing streak in an opposing NL city since losing nine in a row in Philadelphia in 2000-01.

St. Louis 8, Colorado 6 -- The Cardinals broke a 6-6 tie in the seventh inning at Denver after loading the bases against Blaine Neal (0-1). Larry Walker drove in one run on a groundout, and the other came in on a wild pitch by Byung-Hyun Kim.
