Mark Buehrle finally gave up a run in an otherwise dominant outing.
Buehrle stretched his winning streak to a career-high eight games, and the host Chicago White Sox extended their winning streak to seven games with a 5-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday.
The White Sox head for a weekend series with the cross-town rival Cubs at 49-22, the best record in the majors.
“It almost feels like I can go out there and dominate a game,” Buehrle said.
Buehrle (9-1) gave up five hits, his scoreless streak ending at 25 1/3 innings when the Royals scored an unearned run in the eighth. He walked one and struck out six in eight innings, and Carl Everett backed him with a three-run homer.
Tampa Bay 5, New York 3 -- Nick Green hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning, and the Devil Rays rebounded from an embarrassing defeat to the Yankees.
Less than 18 hours after giving up 13 runs in the eighth inning of a 20-11 loss, the Devil Rays improved to 6-3 against the Yankees, who got another home run from Gary Sheffield but little else.
Boston 5, Cleveland 4 -- Edgar Renteria’s run-scoring double in the ninth inning helped the Red Sox complete a three-game sweep at Cleveland.
Trailing, 4-2, in the eighth, the Red Sox staged their 20th come-from-behind win and completed their first sweep at Jacobs Field since May 1999.
Detroit 8, Minnesota 1 -- Nate Robertson (3-5) pitched Detroit’s second complete game in a row, and Omar Infante had a home run and three runs batted in to lead the Tigers at Minneapolis.
The Tigers roughed up Joe Mays (3-3), scoring six runs and eight hits in four innings.
Toronto 3, Baltimore 2 -- Pete Walker (3-0), who pitched in Japan last year and had been working as a reliever for the host Blue Jays, won as a starter for the first time since 2002.
Rafael Palmeiro of the Orioles hit his 561st homer and is two short of tying Reggie Jackson for ninth on the all-time list. Palmeiro is 17 hits shy of 3,000.
Seattle 5, Oakland 4 -- Richie Sexson’s run-scoring single with two out in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted the Mariners after the Athletics had taken a 4-3 lead in the top half of the inning.
