German Prosecutor to Lead Hariri Probe

A veteran German prosecutor has been chosen to lead an international investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the United Nations said.
Detlev Mehlis, chief prosecutor in the office of Berlin’s attorney general, was picked by Secretary-General Kofi Annan because of his experience in probing terrorist and transnational crimes, diplomats said.
In April, the Security Council ordered an inquiry into Hariri’s Feb. 14 slaying after a U.N. fact-finding mission found Lebanon’s inquiry had “serious flaws.”
