Emergency Rule Lifted in Aceh Province

Indonesia lifted emergency rule in Aceh province but said soldiers would remain. Rebels demanded their withdrawal.
Two years ago, Jakarta abandoned peace talks and launched an offensive against the Free Aceh Movement. After the Dec. 26 tsunami, rebels proclaimed a truce and the government reopened peace talks.
Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silahahi said the troops would stay “to restore peace and order” and help “safeguard the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction.” Rebel spokesman Sofyan Dawood charged that attacks by the government had continued.
