Lack of child care options is shameful

Re “Mommy Shift Begins as Nanny Shift Ends,” Column One, Nov. 3
The Times implies it is a shame that middle-class white moms leave their kids with poor Latina moms who are forced to be away from their children all day. Would it be better if the Latina mother were away from her kids doing something other than child care, like, say, working for a clothing manufacturer? Or if she stayed home with her own children, lived off welfare, or was unable to pay the rent?
The shame is in a system that gives parents of all classes few acceptable, affordable options for child care. Furthermore, it is a disgrace that we as a society are resigned to the ugly truth that many hard-working people can barely keep their families from disappearing below the poverty line. Shame on all of us in the richest nation on Earth who simply accept this inexcusable state of affairs as an unavoidable, regrettable fact of life.
