John E. Buchanan Jr., executive director of the Portland Art Museum for the last 11 years, has been appointed director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
He will succeed retiring director Harry S. Parker as head of the new De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park.
Buchanan, who is credited with leading successful capital campaigns in Portland and greatly expanding the museum’s holdings of Native American and Pre-Columbian art, will take charge of the San Francisco museums Feb. 1.
