Gov. Target Homelessness

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Wednesday announced an initiative to end long-term homelessness in California, committing $50 million in state funding to build housing for people who have spent years on the streets.
The governor made the announcement after touring an affordable-housing complex in Long Beach that primarily serves homeless veterans. He said the initiative will use state money for mental health services and housing, and make the state eligible for federal funds for more such projects.
Schwarzenegger said the problems of the long-term homeless are best addressed when private agencies and local, state and federal government collaborate to build housing with a variety of on-site services.
Advocates for the homeless heralded the governor’s proposal to reconstitute an interagency council.
California is one of only three states that does not have a council to coordinate services for the homeless.
