Man Arrested in Sons’ Disappearance Is Freed

A man who allegedly abducted his two sons from their mother’s home in Hemet on Monday night turned himself in to authorities Tuesday morning, and was arrested and released, authorities said.
The boys, Matthew, 13, and Andrew Schembri, 7, were found unhurt at their grandparents’ Hemet home.
An Amber Alert was issued for the boys Monday night after their mother reported them missing. Authorities determined that there was a custody misunderstanding, rather than an abduction, said Sgt. Jeff Pinney of the Hemet Police Department, and Joseph Shembri was released.
The children are in the custody of child protective services and will most likely be placed with relatives, Pinney said.
