Thousands of Protesters Expected Across Southland

Thousands are expected to attend a candlelight vigil and procession today in downtown Los Angeles to urge Congress to pass a comprehensive immigration overhaul.
It is expected to be one of the largest marches among a number planned around the state. The national “Day of Action” comes two weeks after 500,000 people, according to police estimates, marched in Los Angeles to protest proposed immigration legislation.
Other demonstrations in California today include events in San Bernardino, Oxnard, Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Bakersfield, Fresno and Sacramento.
The Los Angeles procession will begin at La Placita Church near Olvera Street with a prayer from Cardinal Roger M. Mahony. After the 5 p.m. candlelight vigil, participants will march to Fletcher Bowron Square.
A rally in Santa Ana starts at noon at the federal building. In the San Fernando Valley, demonstrators will walk from Hermandad Mexicana, 7915 Van Nuys Blvd., to the federal building at 6230 Van Nuys Blvd.
