Dave Thornton, executive director of the Medical Board of California, will retire by mid-2007, he announced Wednesday.
Thornton, 60, who worked for three decades at the Medical Board and was appointed executive director in 2004, said through a spokeswoman that he wanted to spend more time with his family.
The 21-member board, made up largely of gubernatorial appointees, is conducting a nationwide search to hire a replacement.
The Medical Board licenses about 125,000 medical doctors in California.
