L.A. Gets Its First Black Councilman

Gilbert Lindsay became Los Angeles’ first black city councilman, appointed to fill the seat vacated when Ed Roybal was elected to Congress. Three months later, Tom Bradley became the first African American elected to the council. Lindsay, who was born in Mississippi and spent his early years picking cotton, represented the 9th District for 27 years, until his death at the age of 90.
