Program Would Place Cameras in Police Cars

The Police Commission voted Tuesday to seek bids on installing video cameras in 300 patrol cars as part of a pilot program to ensure that officers are not engaging in racial profiling or other misconduct.
The $5-million program has received tentative support from the City Council, which must still act to allocate the money.
If the test program in all five police divisions proves successful, the city may expand it to all patrol cars in the city. Commissioners say the cameras would also protect officers from unfounded complaints by residents.
