D.I.Y. safari -- travel at your pace

THE story on safari options [“Cull the Right Journey for You From the Herd of Safari Trips,” Travel Insider, July 16] fails to mention that you can do a safari on your own.
We’ve traveled to South Africa and Namibia, using a rental car and staying at public safari lodges. The hotel-like facilities are clean, comfortable, inexpensive and can be reserved in advance. Lodges typically have very good restaurants and small grocery stores for food.
Best of all, having your own car means you make your own schedule. You can stay in your car at the watering hole to watch the elephant herd play in the water for several hours; the tour group next to you may have to leave after a few minutes to keep on its schedule.
