U.S. Sailor Convicted in Robbery, Slaying

A Japanese court convicted a U.S. sailor of killing a woman during a robbery near Tokyo and sentenced him to life in prison, a court official said.
William Reese, 22, from Pittsgrove, N.J., was convicted of robbing and fatally beating the 56-year-old Japanese woman near the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, on Jan. 3. He pleaded guilty but said he had not intended to kill the woman, Kyodo News agency reported.
