Taking the abortion debate to a new low

Re “The blunt truth about abortion,” Opinion, June 15
In writing about colleague Ramesh Ponnuru’s book, “The Party of Death,” Jonah Goldberg tells us that “some people are also vexed by the word ‘party,’ thinking it explicitly means Democrats. It doesn’t.” Goldberg doesn’t mention the full title of the book. “The Party of Death: The Democrats, the Media, the Courts, and the Disregard for Human Life.”
So how does Goldberg conclude that it doesn’t explicitly refer to Democrats?
Face it: Ponnuru and Goldberg have contributed to lowering the level of political discourse even more than it was previously.

While both partners should bear the responsibility of having unprotected sex, it is more likely the woman will fare worse. Maybe those who call themselves “pro-life” should consider the life of the one who gets pregnant.

As a partisan Democrat and unreconstructed liberal, I strongly support the reversal of Roe vs. Wade. I happen to think it was correctly decided. But nothing would so quickly destroy the GOP as the end of Roe.
Far from being the “ideal legal regime” for pro-choice advocates, as Goldberg states, Roe is the perfect cover for hypocrites in the Republican Party.
If abortion rights had to be fought over in state legislatures, the Republican Party would quickly revert to its pre-Reagan pro-choice stance -- or become a permanent minority. Either outcome would be good for the country.
