They Won’t Forget Who Lost the Open

It’s official. Phil Mickelson is the winner of golf’s Forrest Gump Award, presented to the golfer who best exemplifies the philosophy of Forrest’s mother: “Stupid is as stupid does.”

I’ll still take a risk taker on the course over a wimp in the broadcast booth any day of the week.

OK, that’s enough. I’ve heard one too many talking golf heads explain Phil Mickelson’s collapse as a result of his not wanting to lay up to win the Open, common golf wisdom (oxymoron, anyone?) deeming that kind of play as “unmanly.”
Unmanly? We are talking about golf, right? Where the players wear slacks and have some guy carry their clubs around all day while they walk in a park, right? Where they whine about the grass being too high?
Please, clear this up once and for all: The manly ship, in golf, sailed centuries ago.

If you’re a Phil Mickelson fan, which I am, you live with his theatrics or die with them. If he had hit the green with his second shot as he had done most of the day, the media, Nicklaus and Watson would have jumped on the bandwagon. At least he made the cut.

Biggest choke of all time? Yes, Greg Norman finally has the monkey off his back.

One’s heart goes out to poor Colin Montgomerie when he laments, “You wonder sometimes why you put yourself through this.” Well, maybe that check for $501,249 will refresh his memory.
