The New York Giants played an exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles’ Wrigley Field. After the game, the magnitude 6.3 Long Beach earthquake struck, killing 115 people, leveling thousands of buildings and causing $45 million in property damage. The Giants, who were staying at the Biltmore Hotel, fled across the street to Pershing Square, experiencing some of the 15 aftershocks that followed. Many of the Giants, who beat the Cubs 5-3, spent the rest of the night playing cards at the Wrigley Field clubhouse with their Chicago rivals.
