Give Howland Credit for Lighting a Fire

Some argue a team reflects, on and off the court, its coaching staff’s collective character. In the case of this year’s UCLA’s men’s basketball team, I agree.

The Bruins’ Pacific 10 championship team is the mirror image of the tireless work ethic of Coach [Ben] Howland and his indefatigable staff. And their relentless defense, unselfish play and never-say-die attitude reflect one more thing: Coach Howland’s teachings have finally erased the bad habits bred by Coach Lavin’s seat-of-your-pants basketball.
