He’s Getting Tired of Laker Excuses

I just finished reading Mike Bresnahan’s March 18 article, headlined, “Tired Old Story for Lakers.”

These players make tremendous amounts of money, eat the finest foods, have personal trainers, fly in comfort, stay in the finest hotels and don’t even “work” every day. And they are tired! Most of them are under the age of 30, Kobe is only 27. It is an insult to the “working” public and fans to complain about being tired.

A 48-minute game? Try an 11-hour day!

During the first half of this season, we witnessed Kobe Bryant shouldering the entire burden of getting wins and putting this team in playoff contention. We saw him drenched in sweat, mouth hanging open after amazing performances that he nearly single-handedly won.

What we’ve got is an intense competitor who, even though he knew the race was a mile long, felt compelled to sprint from the starting line just to keep his team in the race. I believe we are seeing the effects of that.

If this is not a wake-up call to ownership and management to get him some help in the off-season, then they’re even more arrogant than I had imagined.

As I watched the Lakers lose to the Cavaliers, I wondered what Phil Jackson was thinking. Was he thinking? No timeouts as the Cavaliers climbed back into the game? No variation of the last-second inbounds play that everyone knows is going to Kobe?

Send Phil back to Montana or Australia or wherever he wants to wander. His mind is already there anyway.
