Tardy students should pay the price

Re “If They’re on Campus, They’re Not Truants,” column, May 22
If a student had to catch a bus or a train to go to school, would that vehicle wait for a dawdling student? We all know it would not. Why should a roomful of students who are on time have to be disrupted and wait for a latecomer? Of course the violator should be reprimanded and justly dealt with.

I think it is the height of irresponsibility on the part of parents to make excuses for their kids’ tardiness. These children will grow up thinking it’s OK to arrive at work late, and they’ll find out that it’s not tolerated. Students who are late should be held in detention after school. After a certain number of violations, they should be assigned to a Saturday detention. Maybe this would force an attitude change.

Schools should do whatever it takes to make sure children are on time because learning is a great gift. If you are tardy, you will be losing valuable time and interrupting others who are learning. Remember, more learning means a better future.
