Study of Roof Gunshot Detectors Is Proposed

City Councilman Jack Weiss proposed Wednesday that the Police Department study installing gunshot detection systems on roofs in high-crime neighborhoods to help officers reach the scene more quickly when firearms are discharged.
In a motion submitted to the council, Weiss asked that the city look at the use of sound-sensor systems in Oakland and Minneapolis and by the county Sheriff’s Department.
“Oakland police credit the system with leading to the apprehension of a gang member moments after a shooting without a 911 call ever being placed,” Weiss said.
