Ex-Councilman Pleads Not Guilty in Funds Case

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A former city councilman pleaded not guilty Thursday to five charges of misusing public funds to purchase gasoline and a modem, and to rent a car, among other items.

William Van Cleave, 51, was arrested Wednesday and remained in jail on $125,000 bond.

He is accused of misappropriating public money between 2003 and 2005.

A Nov. 30 trial date has been set.

Van Cleave served two terms on the Baldwin Park City Council but lost his bid for reelection last year and left office in December.
