The number of companies raising cash dividend payments to shareholders totaled 377 in the third quarter, down nearly 4% from the 391 that boosted dividends in the year-earlier period, Standard & Poor’s said. It was the first year-over-year decline since 2003. S&P; said it appeared that more companies were favoring stock buybacks over dividend increases.
