Part of Grant to Fund Bird Guano Cleanup

The city will use part of a $1-million grant to clean up bird waste that has been killing trees on Lake Merritt’s islands.
The islands, which were built between 1925 and 1956, have served as a nesting and roosting site for herons, egrets, Canada geese and other birds.
The grant will help renovate an irrigation system that replenishes bird ponds on the islands.
The funding comes from the state’s Wildlife Conservation Board and Proposition 50, a 2002 voter-approved bond measure.
