Tropical storm poses threat

Tropical Storm Paul formed off Mexico’s west coast, and forecasters said it could strengthen into a hurricane within three days, passing by the tip of the Baja California peninsula and hitting mainland Mexico near the state of Sinaloa early in the week.
The storm, which rapidly gained strength and had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, was hovering over the Pacific Ocean about 315 miles south of the coastal city of Cabo Corrientes, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
