1,000 Peacekeepers Mobilize in Lebanon

TYRE, Lebanon — The beefed-up U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon began to take shape Saturday as 1,000 Italian soldiers started moving in, the first large contingent dispatched to help safeguard a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah.
The deployment of the peacekeepers has been delayed since the cease-fire began Aug. 14, in part to work out the force’s mandate and to persuade hesitant countries to offer troops.
The full 15,000-member force is still being assembled, but several countries are on board, with more pledges are coming in.
