Right Tool for the job

Tool has mastered one of rock’s most delicate balances: being inviting enough to sell a million albums at a crack, but disquieting enough to seem like an edgy cult band. The Los Angeles quartet launched its current album, “10,000 Days,” with an imposing performance at Coachella, propelling it toward that million sales mark. But the mystique remains in place, Tool’s progressive art-metal refusing to accommodate the kind of accessibility that has made such fellow travelers as Nine Inch Nails a mainstream presence.
Tool, Staples Center, 1111 S. Figueroa St., L.A. 8 p.m. today and Friday. $35 to $55. (213) 742-7340.
