Blaze Near Pyramid Lake Burns Unchecked

Fire continued to churn out of control through Los Padres National Forest on Saturday, blackening more than 15,500 acres since Labor Day.

As of late Saturday, no homes had been damaged and no one had been injured. The fire, on the border between Ventura and Los Angeles counties, burned to the shoreline of Pyramid Lake on Friday, forcing the closure of several camping sites and recreation areas. The areas remained closed this weekend.

Thick smoke reduced visibility along a stretch of Interstate 5 on Saturday. Much of the eastern side of the national forest remained closed.

Helen Tarbet, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service, said the more than 1,100 firefighters battling the blaze were expected to get help from expected high overnight humidity.

The Day fire erupted before 2 p.m. Monday, about 10 miles northwest of Castaic. The cause is under investigation, and officials put the cost of fighting the fire at nearly $2.5 million so far.
