Defining campus diversity

Re “Diversity works at UC Riverside,” Jan. 15
This story confuses me. I can’t figure out how more than 40% Asian and less than 20% “white” is considered diverse when I look at the respective ratios of those categories in the California population as a whole. And, as usual in all these articles on UC enrollment by racial category with a stress about those groups “under-represented,” nothing is said either about who the “over-represented” minority is, nor about how it got to be that way. Why is it taboo for society to fess up to the importance of family influence upon the educational success of our young people?
