The public’s ‘strange passivity’

Re “Shame on Bush -- and us,” Opinion, July 6
Rosa Brooks knows better than to imply that we are to blame for allowing the Bush administration’s corruption. We are hamstrung by our Constitution. There’s not a thing we can do to prevent the destruction of our country by the Bush-Cheney cabal unless we have 67 votes in the Senate.

While I applaud the sentiments expressed in Brooks’ column, I would amend her statement that “someday, historians will ponder our strange collective passivity in the face of Bush-Cheney madness.” Forget “someday.” I count myself as one of the many non-historians who has been pondering that since the start of the war.
