Man dies while practicing martial arts

A man who apparently died from injuries sustained while practicing martial arts at a local park was identified Saturday as Dat Nguyen, 18, of Santa Ana.
Police say Nguyen was with friends at Sandpointe Park in the 3700 block of south Birch Street when he apparently broke his neck about 6 p.m. Friday. He was rushed to a local hospital but died en route, a spokesman said.
“It was just a freak accident,” Santa Ana Police Sgt. Brad Sadler said. A coroner’s spokeswoman said she could not confirm the cause of death until further testing was done.
